<p>I remember the excitement that my MBA classmates shared with me while recruiters fawned over them making job offers that could lead to fast-track business careers. Naturally, everyone wanted either to eventually own a business or become the CEO of a business. The best that most new MBAs could hope for immediately, however, was to gain a place in a training program that would lead to an executive position or to become a consultant to senior management in a business. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
It was a big commitment to earn a Harvard MBA to become a businessman. You had to live in the Boston area, work long hours every week, not earn much money for two years, and pay lots of tuition fees and expenses. Many classmates graduated with large loans that took many years to repay. Most people figured that they would finally be ahead of the game financially within five to ten years . . . or so they hoped. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Gaining the choice to make that big time and financial commitment was hard, too. Many more applicants were rejected than accepted in those days (it&#8217;s even more difficult to gain a place at Harvard now). </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
If you were over a certain age, you probably wouldn&#8217;t even consider taking this route. Why? The companies hiring from Harvard then were looking for relatively young talent with no more than five years of experience. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
If you weren&#8217;t a person with an undergraduate degree from a prestigious university or someone who had excelled in the military, you probably didn&#8217;t even apply for admission into Harvard Business School. The odds against your acceptance were staggering.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
To many people it seemed like the fast track to business success was a very narrow lane that was closed to them. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Fortunately, optimists abound among those who want to have good business careers. Many feel that if they can get a chance to prove themselves, they will stand out. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Experience supports this confidence: If we look at the leaders of many of the most successful companies, these people didn&#8217;t go through any hard-to-acquire educational experiences. These leaders proved themselves to be capable of getting things done on the job . . . not in the classroom.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Today, the fast track to a successful business career, a passing lane that puts you ahead of other people, is still an MBA . . . but increasingly that MBA is gained from an online school and is earned by someone who has at least twenty years of work experience and is holding down a full-time job. That combination of work and study used to be called &#8220;working your way through school&#8221; but now it has become the best way to get a practical education: You are able to use what you learn in school during your day job. This means faster advancement in a current job while gaining lots of experience in applying new learning to your work.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
What are some of the benefits of this approach? </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
1. You gain credibility: Not everyone has an MBA degree.<br />&#13;<br />
2. You are considered for higher level jobs because you have a good education and lots of experience.<br />&#13;<br />
3. You arrive in your next job ready to do the work, rather than needing a lot more training.<br />&#13;<br />
4. Doing a good job in your first post-MBA position qualifies you for quick advancement into more senior positions.<br />&#13;<br />
5. You are likely to gain an earlier opportunity to build a substantial equity stake in your new employer. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Let&#8217;s look at Mr. Ralph R. Richey, a 2006 MBA graduate of Rushmore University (an online school) as an example of what can be done to help your business career. While in high school, Mr. Richey was accepted into a two-year apprentice program to become an electronic technician. After that, his curiosity about business led him to take courses in bookkeeping and management. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
In the late 1970s and the 1980s, Mr. Richey decided to try a different life style and founded a music studio and a martial arts studio. He also fronted for a rock band, earned a music teacher&#8217;s certificate, and taught both music and martial arts. Having burned the proverbial candle at both ends while single, he decided to go back into a more conventional career after marrying.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
During the 1980s, Mr. Richey owned or managed several companies offering fire and security alarms. He also developed an interest in Computer-Aided Design and took courses to become qualified to work in that emerging technology activity.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
In the 1990s, he shifted to finance and helped raise millions of dollars for a high-tech marine manufacturing company. In the 2000s, he switched his expertise into raising money for real estate development and had the misfortune to attract a fraudulent lending company which didn&#8217;t meet its commitments. That misfire set him back, and he refocused his attention again.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Mr. Richey decided to go into technology management, looking for a senior level position. People didn&#8217;t take him seriously because he lacked a business degree. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Spurred by that realization, he enrolled at Rushmore in early 2005 and graduated less than two years later while holding down a demanding full-time job. He picked Rushmore because he would get credit for 30 years of work experience, would study under experienced executives as his professors, and would have a chance to apply his learning to his job. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
At the time he enrolled, Mr. Richey hoped to use his MBA studies to either start a successful technology consulting business or to be hired as a senior executive in an established technology company with a six-figure salary. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
How did he do after graduation? </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
His first job was a four-week temporary assignment to be the controller for a division of a construction company consortium that paid within his target salary range. Within 18 months, he advanced to become the full-time CFO of the entire consortium. Candidly, he feels that he wouldn&#8217;t have even landed an interview for his current job without his MBA degree form Rushmore.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Mr. Richey reports that &#8220;I have a new sense of personal satisfaction from earning my degree, which in turn has provided a new sense of financial security.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Imagine where Mr. Richey&#8217;s career might be today if he had earned that MBA degree twenty years earlier. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
What&#8217;s the lesson? The passing lane that can speed you into a highly successful career is available through earning a low-cost, online MBA degree while you keep your current job. You gain a lot of upside potential at little cost in time and effort.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Why Should You Look at a Pharmaceutical Sales Job in this Economy?</strong></p>
<p>No doubt that if you are on the job market, you have thought about a position as a Pharmaceutical Sales Representative. Despite the tough economy, pharmaceutical sales jobs continue to be one of the most stable and lucrative careers and the industry looks to remain strong in the future. Even with talk of some kind of government run healthcare, pharmaceutical companies will still need sales representatives to educate doctors on their products and to drive bottom line revenues. Here are my top three reasons why you should take a serious look at this nearly recession-proof industry:</p>
<p>1. The industry is growing. In 1993, the average American received seven prescriptions in a year. In 2004, that number nearly doubled to twelve prescriptions per person in the US. The total number of annual prescriptions in the US now stands at over 3 billion. The global pharmaceutical market grew to 2 billion in 2007 at an annual growth rate of 10% between 1999 and 2007. This strong and consistent growth is largely the result of sales for new and innovative products and emerging international markets. Currently, the top five international pharmaceutical companies are, by revenue in 2007, Johnson &amp; Johnson (.1 B), Pfizer (48.4 B), Glaxo SmithKline (.4 B), Novartis (.8 B) and Sanofi-Aventis (.5 B). In addition, four of the top 10 products in 2007 are forecast to consistently increase sales over the next five years. And the pipeline of new drugs is continuing to grow with many companies reinvesting up to 50% of their sales back into research and development.</p>
<p>2. The job is exciting. Often described as competitive, lucrative, and rewarding, companies rely on pharmaceutical sales reps to work closely with doctors, hospitals and pharmacies to educate them on the use of the products and to better understand patient needs. It is through these professional relationships that sales reps can encourage doctors to prescribe their company’s drugs. Drug companies are also moving towards more innovative and dynamic ways to get their sales message across to doctors, such as Facebook, You Tube, and Twitter. These smarter and more efficient ways of marketing give the sales reps opportunities to network with busy doctors who may not be able to see them in the office. Most pharmaceutical sales reps also find their job challenging and enjoy calling on such an educated customer. The job also involves intense studying of product knowledge, clinical studies, drug indications, side effects, and how to sell against competitive medicines. Pharmaceutical sales reps are among the most knowledgeable and well trained sales reps in any industry.</p>
<p>3. The job is lucrative. Currently, the average pharmaceutical sales rep makes a base salary of ,000, plus bonuses, benefits, and a company car. Sales reps are paid either through commissions or bonuses to meet and exceed sales quotas. Add in incentives for top performers such as cash, stock, and trips, and you can see why most pharmaceutical sales reps make over 0,000 year. There are also plenty of opportunities for advancement within most pharmaceutical companies. Most sales reps start out as a Primary Care rep which calls on family practice doctors and internal medicine doctors. From there a rep can move into a Specialty Care position, such as calling on Cardiologists, Urologists, etc. Reaching the position of Hospital Rep is considered to be the ultimate promotion for many professionals in pharmaceutical sales jobs where the reps interface with the doctors and pharmacists in the Hospital setting. To boot, major companies such as Johnson &amp; Johnson have several different divisions which allows for plenty of upward mobility for top performers.</p>
<p>So what do hiring managers and recruiters look for? Well, certainly the competition for pharmaceutical sales jobs can be high. You will typically need a bachelor’s degree but there are entry-level pharmaceutical sales job positions available and some companies will even help employees get their degree. Most also require one to two years of strong performance and proven success in outside sales, such as copiers, business to business services, or consumer products. But I have personally also helped other professionals such as teachers and nurses land jobs in this industry.</p>
<p>To stand out from your competition, you must first have a winning resume written for the industry. Once you get the interview, companies are looking for you to have a positive attitude and a strong drive to succeed. You will also need to show your great communication skills, creativity, and the ability to generate new business.</p>
<p>Jobs in pharmaceutical sales have not been immune to the effects of the current economic downturn; however, our population is continuing to age and people will always need medical attention and care. And many companies are continuing to experience strong growth. For example, Novartis Pharmaceuticals is expected to increase one sector of its employee base by 20 percent each year until at least 2013 and the bulk of the new positions will be pharmaceutical sales jobs.</p>
<p>I personally continue to see major pharmaceutical companies hiring as evidenced by the sheer number of job postings on many of the job search websites. All in all, employment forecasters are predicting that a pharmaceutical sales job will continue to be one of the more stable careers to enter in the future. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span><span id="lblContentBeforeAdNEW">The last thing many workers have been thinking about in this dismal job market is how to ask for a promotion or a raise. The popular mind-set: &#8220;You&#8217;re lucky you still have a job.&#8221;</p>
<p>But now it&#8217;s time to shake off those recessionary shackles and start thinking seriously about getting what you deserve at work, especially if your employer  is seeing an uptick in business and looking to hire new workers.</p>
<p>&#8220;Companies are starting to worry about defections when the economy gets better,&#8221; said Laurence Stybel, executive in residence at Sawyer Business School, Suffolk University in Boston. &#8220;Once the drumbeat of hiring starts, that&#8217;s when you can go to the boss and say, &#8216;I haven&#8217;t had a raise or promotion in two years.&#8217;&#8221;</p>
<p>Patrick Sweeney, the president and CEO of ODIN Technologies in Ashburn, Va., said his firm hired no new employees last year and had a few layoffs. But this year he plans to add up to 15 new positions.</p>
<p>He also just promoted two employees.</p>
<p>&#8220;Both guys were often the last ones at the office at night and among the first here in the morning,&#8221; Sweeney said. &#8220;More than a great work ethic, they jumped in wherever it was needed, from figuring out complex engineering problems to sweeping up our lab to calling clients on the weekend when they needed help.&#8221;</p>
<p>Getting a promotion in this economy is not a lot different than getting one during an economic boom. You still have to show managers you&#8217;re willing to work hard and can produce results.</p>
<p>&#8220;If you really want to turn yourself into a loser, think about a salary increase as a reward for past good services,&#8221; advised Stybel. &#8220;You&#8217;re trying to extract money from a cheap company, and companies don&#8217;t care about the past  they&#8217;re obsessed about the future.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Saving a company big bucks<br />
</strong>That focus on producing results is what got Hubert Rivera two promotions in 2009, one of the toughest economic years in recent U.S. history.</p>
<p>Rivera became a vice president for InCharge, a Orlando, Fla.-based nonprofit credit counseling organization, in October after 10 years with the company. That came after a previous promotion in April.</p>
<p>Despite having to cut costs because of the economy, the goal was to maintain service to the firm&#8217;s clients. So he took initiative.</p>
<p>&#8220;I spoke to my boss back in May of 2009 about ways we could improve our efforts and help the company grow,&#8221; Rivera said. &#8220;We have been hit hard by the economy and saw reductions in calls and business.&#8221;</p>
<p>He put in extra hours and came up with a ways to cut costs but still maintain customer service, including creating an online newsletter and getting customer referrals from banks. &#8220;We put our focus together and did a lot of work,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>The new initiatives saved the company $826,000.</p>
<p>His strategy for promotion success: &#8220;Don&#8217;t ever feel you&#8217;re entitled to your job. Always feel like there is more you can do, and eventually they will notice. If they don&#8217;t, maybe you should seek other opportunities.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed, sometimes employees work hard and get little or no recognition. Last year I received many e-mails from readers who were frustrated after taking on extra work because of layoffs or furloughs and getting nothing in return. Some workers complained that managers dangled future job promotions as a way to get them to do more, but those promotions never came.</p>
<p>Amanda, a bank employee who did not want her full name used for fear of retribution, shared a typical promotion scenario, which I call the &#8220;promotion Ponzi scheme&#8221;:</p>
<p>&#8220;Last April, my current boss told me that he was going to promote me because of the additional responsibilities I&#8217;ve taken on and the excellent job I&#8217;ve been doing. As of today, I have yet to receive that promotion. Every time I ask him about it, his only response is &#8216;I&#8217;m working on it.&#8217;&#8221;</p>
<p>In this scenario, a worker has two options.</p>
<p>You can simply say nothing and allow it to eat you up every day you&#8217;re at work.</p>
<p>Or you can ask for a meeting with the boss to discuss your performance. At that meeting, bring a list that details what you want, including a timeline on when the promised promotion will go through. Be sure to pepper the conversation with comments like: &#8220;I enjoy my work and this company very much.&#8221;</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t be confrontational. Just say: &#8220;I want to know if I&#8217;m appreciated here. I see others being promoted in other departments, and I want make sure that it&#8217;s not my performance that&#8217;s keeping me from getting a new title.&#8221;</p>
<p>It&#8217;s important to keep in mind that any time you confront your boss, you risk creating an uncomfortable situation, especially if the manager is unable to give you a raise or really doesn&#8217;t want to.</p>
<p><strong>Get that promotion<br />
</strong>If you haven&#8217;t approached the promotion topic yet with your boss and think the time might be right, remember to &#8220;think like a CEO,&#8221; said Sweeney.</p>
<p>&#8220;This applies to everything from turning out lights to selling the company at a cocktail party or sports event,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Be fanatical about promoting the company and its products or services.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;The secret is to create unexpected money for your company before you ask for a piece of it back,&#8221; said Larry Myler, CEO of More or Less Inc. and the author of the forthcoming book called &#8220;Indispensable By Monday.&#8221;</p>
<p>Myler offers two steps. First increase profits by cutting costs, increasing revenues or boosting produtivity. Second, document the financial impact of your actions so your boss can see it in black and white.</p>
<p>Remember it&#8217;s always a good idea to sing your own praises. Contrary to popular belief, your boss doesn&#8217;t know what you&#8217;re doing every minute of the day.</p>
<p>Wendy Enelow, director of the Resume Writing Academy, suggested keeping &#8220;a running list of your accomplishments&#8221; ranging from small process improvements to large projects handled. &#8220;Be certain to include any quantifiable achievements, such as increasing sales 22 percent by capturing a new key account or reducing operating costs 11 percent by eliminating repetitive processes,&#8221; she said.</p>
<p>Ask for a promotion from a point of strength, said Suffolk&#8217;s Stybel. Tell your managers you&#8217;re getting calls from recruiters, he said, but only if you really are.</p>
<p>You also should be networking, joining trade groups and social networking sites, growing your skills, and building your reputation in your industry outside your company,&#8221; Stybel said.</p>
<p>When you&#8217;re ready to talk to your boss, make an appointment and tell your manager exactly what you want to talk about so there are no surprises, advised Sandra Naiman, author of &#8221;The High Achiever&#8217;s Secret Codebook: The Unwritten Rules for Success at Work.&#8221;</p>
<p>While all this advice may help you get that well-deserved promotion, the biggest hurdle is working up the nerve to ask.</p>
<p>&#8220;If you don&#8217;t ask, you&#8217;ll never know the answer,&#8221; Naiman said.</p>

It is composed of career decision-making, research at both the decision-making and campaign phases, resume writing, interviewing, networking, responding to ads, going to headhunters and finally negotiating your salary. The purpose of this article is to make the process as easy to understand as possible, with suggestions and ideas on how to land the position of your choice.</p>
<p>Many people think that landing a new position consists of putting together a resume and looking in the paper under help-wanted. Yes, that is all that some people do, and some of them are successful. But many of them are frustrated. They don&#8217;t see the position they want advertised, and therefore figure it doesn&#8217;t exist. They wind up in a position &#8211; or career &#8212; that was available, without taking the time to find just the right thing.</p>
<p>How do you start?</p>
<p>First, what is it that you want to do? Maybe you&#8217;re a career changer. Maybe you&#8217;re a new college grad. Either way, before you worry about entry vs. mid- or upper-level positions, you need to be clear about what it is you want to do. Try to picture the ideal spot for you. Would you be working inside or out? In the city or the country? In an office or a store? Wearing tailored suits or jeans? Are you managing or producing? Part of a team or working independently? At a computer or on a telephone? Think about what you&#8217;re doing now, as well as what you&#8217;ve done in the past &#8211; what aspects of these positions did you like? What didn&#8217;t you like, and why?</p>
<p>Maybe you&#8217;re not sure. Then, it&#8217;s time to research. The internet makes it easy. There are a wide variety of excellent sites in which to begin researching occupations. There&#8217;s also your public library. Many libraries have excellent career research sections. Ask your librarian for assistance.</p>
<p>This leads to networking. Networking is not only for people who are actively looking for a new employment situation, but for people who want to learn more about different occupations. Informational interviewing is the act of gathering information through personal contact with someone working in a field you&#8217;re interested in. Networking is then asking everyone you know if they know of anyone working in a particular industry, until you find someone who knows of a position that&#8217;s available.</p>
<p>Who do you network with? The answer is simple: everyone! This is an integral component to any job search.</p>
<p>What is your skill set? What have you been trained to do? What is your education? What kind of volunteer work have you done? Is it sufficient for what you want to do now? Or do you need to go back to school? Could you get on-the-job training? Could you get a job that serves as a bridge between what you do now and what you&#8217;d ultimately like to do? Once the parameters of the position you seek are pretty well defined, it is time to begin formulating your resume.</p>

<p>Now it&#8217;s time to add to the networking you&#8217;ve already been doing (maybe you already have some interviews?).</p>
<p>How?</p>
<p>Cold calls/letters to companies. Maybe you have a particular company in mind for which you really want to work. Contact them directly. Many large companies and universities post their open positions. See if you can get hold of that list.</p>
<p>The Classifieds (both on-line and in print). The tried and true method. And yes, for many people it works. Just make sure your resume and cover letter immediately establish a connection to the qualifications mentioned in the ad. The difference between networking and relying on the classifieds is that many key positions never reach the classifieds. People get them through word-of-mouth.</p>
<p>Headhunters/Employment Agencies. This is another tried and true method that works for some. Just be sure that your skill set matches the types of positions the headhunter you choose handles.</p>
<p>Interview Preparation. Everything you&#8217;ve done up to now has been positioning you for the all-important interview. This is your chance to sell yourself. Expect the unexpected and be prepared!</p>

<p>A little about the dynamics of hiring: Between the time when a company offers you a job and you accept, you have leverage.</p>
<p>Inside the company, a bunch of people have met and decided that you are the person, out of a handful of candidates, whom they want to hire. The person who makes the call is expected to get your acceptance. They do not want to reconvene, go to the next candidate or re-ignite their search.</p>
<p>Often, the company has room to improve its offer.</p>
<p>When you get an offer from a place where you&#8217;d like to work, be effusive with your thanks. (I love it when people get excited about a job offer. It&#8217;s one of the big thrills of our job and gets people started off on the right foot.)</p>
<p>Be excited, but don&#8217;t commit on the spot. Tell the employer you&#8217;d like some time to think it over. That&#8217;s only reasonable. But what&#8217;s a reasonable amount of time? That&#8217;s debatable. Overnight at the bare minimum. A couple of days is reasonable. More than a week might make it seem as though you&#8217;re playing one offer against others, or aren&#8217;t very interested.</p>
<p>When they make the offer, get the particulars. How much will they pay? When do they want you to start? What are the specifics of the job? What about vacation pay and insurance? (These are questions you may have wondered about, but declined to get specific about during the interview process.) How about moving expenses? Training opportunities? When will you be up for a salary review?</p>
<p><strong>The Money.</strong><br />
The key question, of course, usually is how much you&#8217;ll earn. When will they review your salary? Typically, that happens after a year. Can they make it six months? This could mean a more immediate raise, not just in the first year, but subsequent years&#8217; raises will come faster, too. This is especially good to negotiate for if you and the company agree that the wage rate isn&#8217;t as high as would seem appropriate for someone with your skills, and you&#8217;re both willing to bank on your ability to prove yourself.</p>
<p><strong>Experience Level.</strong><br />
A key question is to ask what experience level they&#8217;re crediting to you. Especially in the first five years of a career, salary and paid vacation may be structured around how much experience you have. How are they counting the three internships you had? Some will count them, some won&#8217;t and some are negotiable. You want to get that number up as high as you can.</p>
<p><strong>Vacation.</strong><br />
How much vacation will you get, and when will you get it? Some places don&#8217;t allow you to take vacation until the calendar year after the year in which it was earned. That means, that if you start in February, you won&#8217;t get vacation until the next year. You could be looking at a year or more without a break. Ask whether you can take some in the current year.</p>
<p>Vacations tend to be earned on a pro-rated basis for the first year &#8212; so many days off for so many days worked &#8212; and in lumps of two, three or four weeks in the second year and beyond. The number of weeks depends on your experience. If vacation time is important to you, find out whether you can get to that three- or four-week level a year earlier.</p>
<p><strong>Moving Expenses.</strong><br />
How will the company handle your move? Will they pay &#8220;all reasonable costs&#8221;? Does that include your piano? Your pets? Your car? Will they set you up with house or apartment hunting help? Will they pay for the visit out to look? If it looks like their moving policy won&#8217;t cover the expenses from your move, can they give you a lump sum (some call it a signing bonus) to make up the difference?</p>
<p><strong>Training Opportunities.</strong><br />
Few people negotiate development opportunities, but this is an option, too. Ask what and how you&#8217;ll be learning skills for your new job, especially if it&#8217;s something new for you. What form will on-the-job training take? Will you have a mentor? Periodic progress reports?</p>
<p>Even the start date is negotiable. They may want you right away, but you haven&#8217;t had a week off in years. Maybe you want to blow that week into your transition time so you can relax, get ready and celebrate your new job.</p>
<p><strong>Get It In Writing.</strong><br />
Now that you know what might be negotiable, decide what you really need. Reasonable people don&#8217;t negotiate everything. Go for your top-priority items. The way you handle negotiations will affect the way you begin your job. You want to be smart and ready to work with your new employers, not pushy and demanding.</p>
<p>Finally, ask them to put in an offer letter. This is a polite way to ask for it all in writing. This should not be taken as a sign of mistrust, but as a sign that you&#8217;re thorough, above board and business like. It&#8217;s a reasonable request. Don&#8217;t then be surprised if they ask you to sign off on your acceptance, too.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Job interviewing can be an unnerving experience, but if you know how to handle some of the stickiest situations encountered in interviewing, you can be that much more confident. Here are 10 of the stickiest.</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>The Bad Interviewer.</strong> Not every professional      who conducts job interviews with candidates knows how to conduct an      interview effectively. In fact some are downright lousy at it. A bad      interviewer might be unfocused, disinterested, unprepared. He or she might      dominate the interview by doing all the talking or might ask inappropriate      and illegal questions.</li>
</ol>
<p>The unfocused, unprepared interviewer probably hasn&#8217;t read your resume and maybe can&#8217;t even find a copy. This hapless soul doesn&#8217;t even know what to ask you. Be sure to offer this disorganized interviewer a copy of your resume while asking, “May I take you through some highlights of my career?”</p>
<p>While the bigmouth interviewer is holding forth, make as many mental notes as you can (or jot them down if you&#8217;ve brought a small notepad). Don&#8217;t show your exasperation; instead be an attentive listener and hang on the interviewer&#8217;s every word. Try to get a word in edgewise by leaning forward and opening your mouth slightly, advises Anne Kadet on Smartmoney.com. If that doesn&#8217;t work, even a nonstop talker will likely eventually ask if you have any questions. At that point, you can ask questions or describe your fit with the company and the position based on the mental notes you&#8217;ve been making.</p>
<p>For inappropriate and illegal questions, see No. 6 below and try your hardest to keep the interview focused on your qualifications for the job.</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>The &#8220;Tell Me about      Yourself&#8221; Question.</strong> Of course, this question is not a question at all but      a request for a command performance. It&#8217;s the most commonly asked interview question, yet it frequently still rattles      interviewees. The trick is to make your response a succinct summary of      information that is specifically targeted to the job you&#8217;re interviewing      for. (Sell yourself!) For example:</li>
</ol>
<p>&#8220;My background to date has been centered around preparing myself to become the very best financial consultant I can become. Let me tell you specifically how I&#8217;ve prepared myself. I am an undergraduate student in finance and accounting at ___________ University. My past experience has been in retail and higher education. Both aspects have prepared me well for this career.&#8221;</p>
<p>The interviewer is <strong>not</strong> looking for your autobiography and probably is not interested in your personal life unless aspects of it are relevant to the job you&#8217;re interviewing for.</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>The &#8220;Weakness&#8221;      Question.</strong> The      conventional wisdom about responding to “What are your weaknesses?” used      to be that the candidate should spin a weakness into a strength. For      example: “I&#8217;m a perfectionist and don&#8217;t believe anyone can do the job as      well as I can, so I sometimes have a hard time delegating.” That type of      response has, however, worn out its welcome with interviewers. Other      approaches include offering a weakness that is inconsequential to the job      (such as being a poor speller and relying on spellcheck) or denying that      you have any weaknesses that would stand in the way of your performing the      job effectively. The former approach may work but be seen as shallow,      while the latter sometimes lacks credibility. After all, everyone has a      weakness.</li>
</ol>
<p>An approach that seems to work well is to talk about an area that was once a weakness but that you have worked to improve. Here&#8217;s how you could frame the perfectionist example above in terms of professional growth: &#8220;I tend to be a perfectionist who has had trouble delegating tasks to others, but I&#8217;ve come to see that teamwork and capitalizing on everyone&#8217;s strengths is a much more effective way to get the job done than trying to do it all myself.&#8221;</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>The &#8220;Why should I hire      you?&#8221; Question.</strong> The unspoken part of this question is: “Why should I hire you      [above all the other candidates]?” This is your chance to shine, to really      make a sales pitch for yourself. Use your Unique Selling Proposition to      describe what sets you apart from other candidates. The employer will make      a significant investment in hiring and training you, so tell the      interviewer that this investment will be justified. For example, you could      say: &#8220;I sincerely believe that I&#8217;m the best person for the job. Like      other candidates, I have the ability to do this job. But beyond that      ability, I offer an additional quality that makes me the very best person      for the job &#8212; my drive for excellence. Not just giving lip service to      excellence, but putting every part of myself into achieving it. Throughout      my career, I have consistently strived to become the very best I can      become. The success I&#8217;ve attained in my management positions is the result      of possessing the qualities you&#8217;re looking for in an employee.&#8221;</li>
</ol>
<ol>
<li><strong>&#8220;Off-the-wall&#8221;      Questions, also known as &#8220;Wild Card&#8221; or      &#8220;No-Right-Answer&#8221; Questions.</strong> Occasionally you&#8217;ll be asked an interview      question that&#8217;s just downright weird and certainly doesn&#8217;t seem to have      anything to do with the job &#8212; for example, a question like this: &#8220;If      you were an ice-cream cone, what flavor would you be?&#8221; Interviewers      often ask these oddball questions to see how quickly you can think on your      feet and whether you can avoid becoming flustered. Others, unfortunately,      ask them because they enjoy seeing interviewees squirm. Still others are      amused by the range of creative &#8212; and not-so-creative &#8212; responses they      receive.</li>
</ol>
<p>Don&#8217;t let an off-the-wall question rattle you. Take a moment to gather your thoughts and respond the best way you can. There is rarely a wrong answer to this type of question, but quick-thinking candidates can turn the response into an opportunity to impress the employer. A response given by one of my former students has always stuck in my head as being a standout answer. The question was: &#8220;If you were a superhero, what would be your super powers, and why?&#8221; His response: &#8220;I think I would prefer to be a superhero like Batman, who doesn&#8217;t have superpowers per se, but who relies on his intelligence and use of the right tools to get the job done.&#8221;</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Illegal Questions:</strong> It&#8217;s illegal to ask about age,      marital status, children, childcare arrangements, and the like, but      employers still do &#8212; or come up with subtle ways to ask, such as by      inquiring about when you graduated from high school/college. It&#8217;s best to      address the concern behind the question rather than the question itself by      saying something like: &#8220;There is nothing about my personal status      that would get in the way of my doing a great job for your company.&#8221;      While it may also be tempting to point out the illegality of the question,      doing so likely won&#8217;t endear you to the interviewer.</li>
</ol>
<ol>
<li><strong>Salary Questions:</strong> As a screening device,      interviewers often ask early in the interview what salary you are looking      for. If you ask for more than the employer is willing to pay (or      occasionally, on the flip side, undervalue yourself), the interviewer can      eliminate you before spending a lot of time with you. That&#8217;s why the best      tactic for salary questions is to delay responding to them as long as      possible &#8212; ideally until after the employer makes an offer. Try to      deflect salary questions with a response like      this: &#8220;I applied for this position because I am very interested in      the job and your company, and I know I can make an immediate impact once      on the job, but I&#8217;d like to table salary discussions until we are both      sure I&#8217;m right for the job.&#8221;</li>
<li><strong>Questions about Being      Terminated from a Previous Job.</strong> It&#8217;s always uncomfortable to be asked your reasons for      leaving a job from which you were terminated. Don&#8217;t lie about it, but      don&#8217;t dwell on it either. You could explain that you and the company were      not a good fit, hence your performance suffered. Or that you and your      supervisor had differing viewpoints. Emphasize what you learned from the      experience that will prevent you from repeating it and ensure that you      will perform well in the future.</li>
</ol>
<ol>
<li><strong>Questions about Reasons for      Leaving a Current Job.</strong> This question is similar to the previous question, even if you      haven&#8217;t been fired. Responses about fit with the company and differing      views from your supervisor can also work here, but remember never to trash      a current employer. Always speak positively about past and present      employers even if your experience has not been positive with them. Another      good response in this situation is to say that you determined you had grown      as much as you could in that job and you are ready for new challenges.</li>
</ol>
<ol>
<li><strong>Questions about the Future.</strong> Interviewees are often asked,      &#8220;Where do you see yourself in five (or 10) years?&#8221; Strike a      delicate balance when responding to this kind of question, with just the      right mix of honesty, ambition, and your desire to be working      at this company long-term.</li>
</ol>
<p>Avoid responses such as starting your own business, running for Congress, which suggest that you don&#8217;t plan to stay with the company.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not totally inappropriate to mention the personal (marriage, family), but focus mainly on professional goals. Mention your career and company goals first, and tack on any mention of marriage and family at the end.</p>
<p>Your response could be: &#8220;I&#8217;m here to let you know that I am the best person for the job. If in the future you feel I would be a candidate for a higher level position, I know I wouldn&#8217;t be passed up.&#8221;</p>
<p>OR: &#8220;I hope to stay at the company and expect that in five years, I&#8217;ll make a significant advance in the organization.&#8221;</p>
<p>OR: &#8220;I would like to become the very best ______________ your company has.&#8221;</p>
<p>And then there&#8217;s my personal favorite, which a student told me a friend had used. Asked by the interviewer, &#8220;Where do you see yourself in five years?&#8221; The response: &#8220;Celebrating the five-year anniversary of your asking me this question!&#8221; While the response probably made the interviewer laugh, it&#8217;s probably not the best answer.</p>
<p><strong>Final thoughts.</strong><br />
Job-seekers need to think of each interview question as an opportunity to showcase an accomplishment or strength. Every response should build momentum toward convincing the interviewer that you deserve to advance to the next level, whether that level is another round of interviews or a job offer.</p>
